Raingardens: landscaping for clean water and healthy streams

Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm in the Natural Resources Education Center
Instructor: Derek Godwin, Oregon State University Extension

This course has been approved by the Oregon Landscape Contractor's Board for 8 CEH credits toward certification renewal- Technical Subjects category.

Raingardens are gardens with a purpose. They are designed to capture stormwater run-off from roofs, driveways, sidewalks, roads in order to store and treat the water. This day-long workshop will provide a variety of indoor lecture, design exercise, and outdoor hands-on learning experiences to help participants learn how raingardens capture and treat stormwater run-off and benefit streams and groundwater; to assess sites for locating, sizing, and designing raingardens; and to design plant selection, construction, and maintenance of gardens. Raingardens will be explored in the context of horticultural applications that provide ecosystem services to the built environment.

This workshop is designed for horticulture or landscape students; professional landscape designers; green industry or urban planning professionals who want an introduction to raingardens for stormwater management; or homeowners looking for new solutions to drainage and ponding.

Fee of $125 includes continental breakfast, box lunch, hand-outs, admission to The Oregon Garden, and fieldtrip transportation.
